Even Dems are Turning on Sanctuary City Policies

(IntegrityPress.org) – New York Democrats are beginning to rethink their “sanctuary city” policy after the murder of nursing student Laken Riley. The suspect in Riley’s brutal death is Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, an illegal alien who was previously arrested in New York City and released without Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) being notified due to the policy. Ibarra’s release marks yet another instance of criminals being detained by the government for criminal behavior and let go to do something worse thereafter.

Ibarra had been arrested for reckless driving and criminal endangerment of a child after he was caught on an unregistered moped driving around the city with a small child in the vehicle without a helmet or proper seating. ICE was not informed even though the NYPD knew he was in the country illegally.

Just months later, Ibarra would allegedly stalk, abduct, assault, and murder 22-year-old Laken Riley, a nursing student taking classes at Augusta University in Athens, Georgia. Riley was passionate about fitness and helping others, which was why she was jogging alone when she was attacked on February 22.

Former NY Gov. David Paterson (D) is publicly supporting NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ (D) position on reversing the sanctuary city policy in the aftermath of Riley’s public murder. Paterson pointed out that the city is housing nearly 200,000 illegals, many of whom are criminals in their home countries. Adams recently told CNBC that illegals who are busted for criminal activities should be deported after serving their sentences.

Riley’s death is the latest high profile murder of an American youth by a criminal who was able to enter and remain in the country illegally thanks to leftists in federal, state, and local governments. Lizbeth Medina, 16, was allegedly murdered by illegal alien Rafael Govea Romero, 23; his indictment suggests Romero was intent on robbing and/or raping the teenaged girl.

Nilson Granados-Trejo, 25, was charged with first and second degree murder for his involvement in a gang related shootout that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old child and injured his 17-year-old mother. Trejo had been arrested twice and an immigration judge ordered his deportation, but New Jersey authorities with the Montgomery County Police Department decided to ignore the immigration detainer and released him back into the community on March 27, 2023.
