(IntegrityPress.org) – House Republicans are rallying around former President Donald Trump as his criminal prosecution in New York over alleged campaign finance violations continues. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-LA) has drafted a resolution which seeks to confer a Congressional Gold Medal to honor his performance as president during his previous term. The award is the highest honor Congress can confer to a civilian.
The bid is supported by six other Republican Representatives at present, including House GOP Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA).
Luna highlighted that the country was in a better shape during Trump’s presidency in comments given to the press. She said Congress has a duty to honor civilians who have made significant contributions to the country. Other former presidents to be granted the honor include Ronald Reagan, Harry Truman, Ulysses S. Grant, and George Washington.
It’s unlikely the resolution passes into law, however, as the Senate is controlled by Democrats. The move is one of many attempts to signal boost Trump as the November general election inches closer.
Reschenthaler spearheaded an initiative in April to rename Washington Dulles International Airport to “the Donald J. Trump International Airport.” Democrats derided the effort as “ridiculous,” while suggesting Congress’s time be better used for spending taxpayer money.
Trump has been joined by multiple GOP bigwigs this week during his appearance in court in downtown Manhattan. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appeared in the courtroom on Tuesday, May 14 and decried the prosecution as political and obviously so in comments given to the press later that day.
Johnson additionally suggested the entire ordeal “has no merit” and highlighted that prosecutors had passed on prosecution multiple times before New York DA Alvin Bragg was able to resurrect the allegations. Some have called it legal necromancy, suggesting the Democrats are animating a dead issue with legal magic.
Trump has also been gagged from speaking the truth about Judge Juan Merchan’s daughter working for the Biden campaign and disparaging witness for the prosecution and disbarred lawyer Michael Cohen, who had previously admitted to perjury. The corporate press is quick to suggest Trump’s free speech incites violence.
