Jill Biden to Attend King Charles III’s Coronation

(IntegrityPress.org) – Jill Biden, the First Lady, will be attending the coronation of King Charles the 3rd of the United Kingdom in London next month, leading the US delegation to the highly anticipated event. According to the White House, President Joe Biden congratulated King Charles in a phone call on Tuesday, 4/5/23, reaffirming the strong ties between the United States and the United Kingdom. He also informed the king that Jill Biden would be attending on behalf of the United States.

Reports that President Biden would not be attending the coronation surfaced, despite the expected presence of dozens of world leaders. The idea was discounted by American authorities, who also pointed out that no US president had ever attended the coronation of a British queen. Instead, Jill Biden will attend the event, which is set for Saturday, May 6, and President Biden emphasized in his call that he will meet King Charles in the future.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will preside over the coronation itself, which will be a solemn religious service as well as a time for festivities and grandeur, Buckingham Palace revealed earlier this year. The last coronation ceremony took place over 60 years ago when Queen Elizabeth was crowned.

In September, the President and First Lady both journeyed to London to attend the late queens funeral. In a phone interview from London in September, Jill Biden had said that she had spoken with King Charles about his mother during a private reception with the royal family and other visiting dignitaries on the eve of the funeral service. She emphasized the human toll of grief and how the royal family has to bear and grieve in public. She also noted that the king and Prince William seem to be doing okay.

The first lady’s attendance at the coronation marks a significant moment in the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
