(IntegrityPress.org) – Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida praised the US Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, defending the decision as a clarification of what the law already is.
The GOP senator, who is reportedly one of Trump’s top considerations for a running mate, appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, July 7, when he was asked if he was “comfortable” with the recent Supreme Court decision. Rubio defended the ruling and reiterated that he believes Democrats are using the legal system to target the former president.
Rubio said he was “uncomfortable” with President Joe Biden targeting his political opponents, and that he could not “think of a single prominent Democrat” targeted by Trump when the former president was in office. He said it was “funny” to him to read comments by people “warning about all of the horrible things” they claim Trump will do if returned to the White House, which Rubio said the Democrats are already doing by weaponizing the justice system against the presumptive GOP nominee.
CNN anchor Dana Bash challenged claims by Rubio that only Republicans are being targeted by citing the prosecution of Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey. Rubio disagreed and said they only go after members of their own party who “don’t do everything the Democrats want.”
Regarding the Supreme Court decision, Rubio said all the court did was reiterate what the existing law already stated about presidential immunity. He noted that this immunity has always included “quasi-official acts or semi-official acts,” such as remarks made by the president about subjects relevant to American life and politics, including elections.
The Florida senator blasted the Biden administration and Democratic Party again for defying that immunity standard and used the courts to “persecute and prosecute” Trump in an effort to bankrupt, silence, and jail the former president. Rubio said they have spent “every single day” going after Trump and his allies since Biden took office.
