(IntegrityPress.org) – Leaders from around the Middle East condemned the assassination attempt against Republican candidate for president, Donald Trump.
Trump was confirmed as the official nominee and announced Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate on Monday, July 15. He was shot at during a campaign rally two days prior on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attack resulted in one dead attendee and Trump being hit in the ear by a bullet. Two other attendees were injured by bullets intended for Trump.
Virtually all Middle Eastern nations condemned the incident. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called the incident a “treacherous attack” in a post on social media and wanted to emphasize his country’s official position of condemnation of political violence. He added his hope that the election will continue without further eruptions of violence or hate.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his hope for justice for anyone involved in planning and executing the attack. The only suspect at the time of writing is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks who was shot and killed by counter snipers after he opened fire on Trump. Multiple investigations will follow from federal, Congressional and state authorities.
Israeli officials also condemned the attack on Trump while some users on social media inaccurately contrasted their sentiments about violence being inappropriate for political ends with the ongoing war in Gaza.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack, saying that the Palestinian government rejects “violence, terrorism, and extremism” in all its forms. Abbas’ sentiments were surprising given a previously terse relationship with the Trump administration and Trump’s vocal support for Israel.
Iranian media was not nearly as supportive; a media account affiliated with Iranian-supported militias in the region shared a picture of Trump bleeding with a caption highlighting the entrance of “terror” into “fortified palaces.” Trump had previously ordered the assassination of former Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani during his administration.
