(IntegrityPress.org) – Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has publicly endorsed the current Vice-President Kamala Harris as she steps into the role of Democrat presidential nominee.
Following President Joe Biden’s announcement on July 21 that he would no longer run for president, Harris has been looked to by many in her party as the most likely replacement. Biden’s withdrawal letter named her as his preferred replacement, and Harris appears to have won enough Democratic support to seal the deal. However, she will have to wait until next month’s Democratic National Convention to have the matter confirmed. Votes will be cast by party delegates throughout the first week of August.
Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House who has enjoyed a nearly 40-year political career, is understood to enjoy a high level of influence in the Democratic party. Speaking after Biden’s withdrawal, she praised Harris’ “strength and courage” and her pro-abortion rights stance. Pelosi’s recent appraisal of the vice president is something of a change from her previous public comments.
In September 2023, when asked by the press whether or not she thought Harris was the right running mate for Biden, she replied, “[Biden] thinks so.” While Pelosi refused to endorse Harris at that time explicitly, she did add that she thought of her as being “politically astute” and said that people underestimated her.
Despite Pelosi’s previous lack of enthusiasm, she has now offered her vocal support along with a majority of Democratic delegates and, according to a recent poll, a majority of Democratic voters. Harris has seized on this, giving a campaign speech to a crowd in Milwaukee on July 23 in which she celebrated a sudden surge in campaign donations. Her 2024 campaign coffers are reported to have swelled by $100 million since Biden announced his exit from the race.
She touted herself as a “people-first” president if she were elected. While addressing the crowd, she also took the opportunity to criticize her rival, Donald Trump, emphasizing her career as a prosecutor and contrasting that with his recent court cases.
