(IntegrityPress.org) – President Biden said that Israel was losing support from the international community due to its tendency to engage in “indiscriminate bombing” which results in a high civilian death count. Biden made the comments during a fundraising event held on December 12th.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the number of casualties “unacceptable” and said the number was staggering. For his part, Secretary of State Antony Blinken thinks the number is “far too many” along with international protesters demanding a ceasefire.
Biden still claimed to support the Jewish state but suggested that the Israeli regime was making things difficult with its continued hardline stances, including its desire to eradicate Hamas as the current governing body of Gaza.
Hardliners have consistently refused to endorse the creation of a distinct Palestinian state in Gaza or the West Bank, collectively known as the occupied territories despite most of the international community supporting a two-state solution.
Pope Francis has also called for hostages to be released and an end to the ongoing conflict due to the bloodshed in the region.
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said a ceasefire is premature at this stage and they intend to continue to wage war with or without backing from the international community. On the other side, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said that they’re ready to negotiate an end to the conflict.
The number of civilian casualties in the conflict are higher than any other historical conflict in recent memory.
An anonymous U.S. Air Force officer has suggested that arrogance among the Israelis is leading to the continuation of the conflict. He said in private discussions when they are candid Israeli officials invoke the Holocaust, blame Hamas, reference 9/11, and proclaim “Never Again” in response to American requests to wind things down.
Over 18,000 people have been killed on the Palestinian side, while a further 50,000 have been injured. Millions have been displaced by the fighting. Palestinian health authorities also added that there are likely hundreds or thousands more dead under rubble who have yet to be counted in the official death toll.
