“However, Captain Shaun Butts of the Philadelphia Police Department told CBS News that police believe the shooter is a Black male juvenile who was dressed all in black at the time of the attack.” – Captain Shaun Butts
As of now, the gunman remains at large, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that could aid in his capture. The Philadelphia Police Department can be contacted at 215-686-8270, or anonymous tips can be submitted via their tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
City’s Response and Ongoing Efforts
Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed her frustration with the incident, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to reduce violence in the city. Despite this tragic event, Philadelphia has seen a decrease in homicides and shootings in 2024 compared to the previous year. Shootings are down 34%, and violent crime has decreased by 12%.
“This incident affirms why we can’t take our foot off the gas. Now is the time for us to keep pushing and continue with our comprehensive approach.” – Mayor Cherelle Parker
Although Philadelphia is projected to have over 1,000 shooting victims in 2024, the city is on track for fewer than 300 homicides this year, which would be the lowest since 2016. In April, the Center for American Progress reported that Philadelphia had the most significant drop in gun violence among major U.S. cities, a testament to ongoing efforts to combat violent crime.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to apprehend the suspect and determine the motive behind this senseless act of violence. The community remains on edge, but resilient, as they come to terms with this latest incident in the ongoing struggle against gun violence in urban America.
