(IntegrityPress.org) – Former and potential future President Donald Trump has gotten a major boost in the polls in the aftermath of an attempted assassination over the weekend on July 13. Early polling taken on the following Monday in a major swing state revealed Trump is gaining ground fast.
The VCU/Wilder poll was taken among voters from Virginia, a state that hasn’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate in over two decades. The last time a Republican carried the state, it was President George W. Bush’s reelection in 2004. The polling showed Biden behind Trump by three points, 39 to 36 percent. The poll surveyed 809 Virginians between June 24 and July 3. The error rate is 4.8%.
For comparison, Biden carried Virginia in 2020 with over a 10% margin and Hillary Clinton won the state in 2016 by 5%. Prior polling showed Biden and Trump neck-and-neck with both having roughly 42% of the population’s support in May. In June, Biden jumped ahead by three points. Another poll from the corporate press and Siena College from Monday showed Biden ahead of Trump 48 to 45 percent.
The VCU poll showed Biden losing support among blacks, a key demographic that helped carry him to victory the last time. Only 46% of black Virginians said they’d vote for Biden, down from 67% of black Virginians queried in December last year. Joe Biden infamously suggested blacks who don’t vote for him “ain’t black” and apologized for the remarks in 2021.
Black voters have tended to support the Democratic party, generally speaking. The switch is noticeable and one of many problems for the Biden campaign. Black voters have complained that Biden is only using them for votes and doesn’t actually care about their concerns. It’s also been noted that younger black males especially seem to be leaning toward the GOP over the Democratic party.
During the 2020 electoral cycle, Biden carried 86% of the black vote nationally, while Trump only took 12%. A national poll from the corporate press taken in June showed that Trump has more than doubled his support to 26% of all black voters nationwide.
