IP Bacon Thinks Johnson Could Lose Speakership

(IntegrityPress.org) Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) speaking with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on March 31 suggested “it’s possible” that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is ousted over bringing Ukrainian aid to the floor for a vote in the House.

Bacon is in support of continued funding of the Ukrainian and Israeli conflicts by adding billions of American tax dollars into both wars. He suggested “one or two” congressmen weren’t “team players” and could use the tension within the party for self-promotion. Bacon highlighted that the GOP only holds a very slim majority in Congress, making one or two votes crucial.

Bacon discussed a bill he worked on in collaboration with Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Jarden Gold (D-ME) and Ed Case (D-HI) which combined foreign aid for Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine totaling $66 billion. He said that he believed they had enough support in the House to pass it.

He also added that Democrats might save Johnson, should conservative Republicans attempt to remove him from power. Bacon additionally told Welker that Johnson said the bill would come to the floor for a vote.

Prior to the most recent Congressional recess, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) threatened to oust Speaker Johnson over the Ukrainian aid issue. She filed a motion to vacate without filing it as privileged, so it’s unclear if it will proceed. Speaking about the move, she told members of the press that it was intended as a warning.

The House is currently out on a two-week recess for the Easter holiday and won’t return to D.C. until April 9. Speaking about a potential removal of Johnson, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said he believed that another ouster could result in a Democrat taking over the role. He suggested that some Republicans could vote for Rep. Hakken Jeffries (D-NY) out of spite.

Republicans are similarly divided over whether or not to advance impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden. Chair of the House Oversight Committee Rep. James Comer (R-OH) said he was “preparing criminal referrals” which would mark the end of their investigation into Biden’s financial corruption. The Committee has maintained that Biden took money from Chinese, Ukrainian, and even Russian entities over the years in exchange for political influence.
